Irish Christmas in America , a musical show featuring top Irish musicians, singers and dancers, is performing two shows at the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton on Friday, December 21, 2012 at .  Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online for both the 5:00 p.m . and 8:00 p.m shows. Rest in Peace: Larry Meehan, Boston's Tourism Spokesman

Today we pause to remember our good friend Larry Meehan , the energetic, personable and accomplished spokesman for greater Boston's travel and tourism industry.  He died on Saturday, December 15, 2012 after battling pancreatic cancer. Our condolences go to his wife Melissa and sons David and Will, to his extended family, and to all his colleagues, friends and supporters in the tourism industry in Massachusetts and around the world.  Larry worked for the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau for more than two decades and helped to brand Boston as one of America's favorite cities.  All of us who knew Larry were inspired by his love of life and devotion to his family, as well as his gentle humor, talent and professionalism in all aspects of his job promoting Boston. Frank McCourt's The Irish and How They Got That Way opens in Boston area on January 24, 2013

Frank McCourt's The Irish and How They Got That Way is opening at the Davis Square Theatre in Somerville on Thursday, January 24 and running through March 17, 2013. Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning author, the late Frank McCourt , The Irish and How They Got That Way tells the story of the Irish experience both in Ireland and the United States. It's imbued with McCourt's unique humor and draws on his personal experience living in both countries. Told through a revue of songs, this sometime irreverent but always loving look at the Irish people features music ranging from traditional Irish melodies to the works of Broadway star George M. Cohan to the music of U2. Kennedy New Frontier Awards to two women whose work reflects the spirit of President Kennedy.   The ceremony takes place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston. Receiving the awards in 2012 are Stacey Abrams , Minority Leader of the Georgia House of Representatives and the first woman to lead either party in the Georgia General Assembly; and social entrepreneur Veronika Scott , founder of an innovative humanitarian project that hires homeless women in Detroit. Honoring the Late Michael Joyce in South Boston on Saturday, November 3

Michael Joyce, who emigrated from Connemara to Boston in 1949 and became an influential advocate of immigration reform at the Massachusetts State House, died in 1989, but he is still remembered fondly by his family and friends. They have come together to create the Michael Joyce Memorial Playground in Marine Park in South Boston, a beautiful tribute to Joyce's life. At the official opening of the park on October 14, 2010,  State Senator Jack Hart of South Boston said, “His family, the many immigrants he helped, and now this playground, are all part of Mike Joyce’s legacy. Children and families for generations will come and enjoy this beautiful park.” The Friends of Michael Joyce, Inc. is a registered 501 (c) (3) non profit organization.

John Farrell Named New Manager of Boston Red Sox

John Farrell, October 23, 2012 by Michael Quinlin   John Edward Farrell was named new manager of the Boston Red Sox today.  He is the 46th person to hold the job. Irish Flutist Michael Tubridy and Fiddler Seamus Connolly Playing at Boston College on October 23

Irish flute player Michael Tubridy is performing with fiddle master Seamus Connolly at an Irish Dance and Ceili taking place at Boston College on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, takes place at Gasson Hall on the Chestnut Hill campus. Noted Irish dancer Kieran Jordan is leading the ceili and dancing activities for the evening.  Born in County Clare, Michael Tubridy is best known as an original member of The Chieftains , formed in 1962, and plays wooden flute, tin whistle and concertina.  He left the band in 1979 and continues to play great traditional music and teaches at Irish festivals around the world. Irish Cultural Centre in Canton Presents One-Man Show on Playwright Brendan Behan, October 12-13

The Irish Cultural Centre is presenting A Broth of a Boy , a one-man play based on the life of Brendan Behan, adapted from Behan's own writings.  A Broth of a Boy is directed by Richard Smithies and stars actor Danny Venezia .  The show is running on Friday, October 12 and Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 8:30 p.m. Tickets to the show are $15 general admission, and can be purchased at the door.   Called  "A remarkable full-body performance. Irish traditional musicians Cillian and Niall Vallely are performing at the Blackstone River Theatre in Cumberland, RI on Sunday, October 7, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.  They're joined by Scottish guitarist Allan Murray . Master Drummer Mance Grady is Teaching the Irish Bodhran at the Irish Cultural Centre This Fall

    Mance Grady , considered to be one of the finest Irish bodhran players in the world, is teaching a ten-week course at the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton, Massachusetts, starting on September 27, 2012.   The classes take place every Thursday: beginner class goes from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. and intermediate class goes from 8:15 to 9:15 p.m.  Tuition is $175 for ICC members and $200 for non-members.    For more information and to register for the course, click here .  Grady, a life-long drummer and Rhode Island resident, has devoted the last 37 years to perfecting his playing of the bodhran , an Irish traditional instrument made from goatskin and played with a double-headed stick.  Grady is also a premier bodhran maker.   The Irish Cultural Centre is a year-round facility that promotes and celebrates Irish culture.  It's located on 46 acres off of Route 138 in Canton, Massachusetts, just a few miles from Boston.  Find out about becoming a member of the Irish

  The Eire Society of Boston is hosting a reading by Irish-born author Aine Greaney at the Boston Public Library in Copley Square on Sunday, October 14, 2012, starting at 2:00 p.m.  The reading takes place in the Orientation Room on the first floor of the library. Greaney is reading from her most recent novel, Dance Lessons , a story of a young widow's quest to find the truth about her Irish-born husband's life and lies.  The novel explores the issues of family, land, women's issues and the 1980s wave of Irish immigration to Boston.
