Irish Christmas in America show comes to the Irish Cultural Centre on Friday, December 21


Irish Christmas in America, a musical show featuring top Irish musicians, singers and dancers, is performing two shows at the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton on Friday, December 21, 2012 at .  Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online for both the 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m shows.

Irish Christmas in America is produced by fiddler Oisín Mac Diarmada of the Irish traditional group Teada.  This year's performers include singer/songwriter Aaron Jones of the Scottish group Old Blind Dogs, accordionist and singer Séamus Begley from West Kerry, Gráinne Hambly (Irish harp), Seán Gavin (flute, uilleann pipes), Brian Cunningham (sean-nós dance) and Seán Mc Elwain (guitar).

Rest in Peace: Larry Meehan, Boston's Tourism Spokesman


Today we pause to remember our good friend Larry Meehan, the energetic, personable and accomplished spokesman for greater Boston's travel and tourism industry.  He died on Saturday, December 15, 2012 after battling pancreatic cancer.

Our condolences go to his wife Melissa and sons David and Will, to his extended family, and to all his colleagues, friends and supporters in the tourism industry in Massachusetts and around the world. 

Larry worked for the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau for more than two decades and helped to brand Boston as one of America's favorite cities. 

All of us who knew Larry were inspired by his love of life and devotion to his family, as well as his gentle humor, talent and professionalism in all aspects of his job promoting Boston.

Christmas Celebration Concert at Blackstone River Theatre is December 15-16

Check out this year's 5th annual Christmas Celebration at Blackstone River Theatre in Cumberland, RI, on December 15-16, 2012.   It features an evening of song, dance, spoken word from over a dozen great singers, musicians, dancers and storytellers.

Frank McCourt's The Irish and How They Got That Way opens in Boston area on January 24, 2013



Frank McCourt's The Irish and How They Got That Way is opening at the Davis Square Theatre in Somerville on Thursday, January 24 and running through March 17, 2013.

Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning author, the late Frank McCourt, The Irish and How They Got That Way tells the story of the Irish experience both in Ireland and the United States. It's imbued with McCourt's unique humor and draws on his personal experience living in both countries. Told through a revue of songs, this sometime irreverent but always loving look at the Irish people features music ranging from traditional Irish melodies to the works of Broadway star George M. Cohan to the music of U2.

Christmas Celtic Sojourn Celebrates Ten Years with Concerts Throughout New England, December 15-22


Christmas Celtic Sojourn, a music and dance performance based on traditional celebrations in Ireland and other Celtic countries, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year with eleven shows taking place in five venues across New England between December 15 through December 22, 2012.

Hosted by Brian O'Donovan of WGBH, 89.7 FM in Boston, this year's show features an all-star cast of musicians, singers and dancers. Here is ticket information.

Club Passim in Harvard Square is hosting a Celtic Music session on Monday, December 10, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.  The event is free and open to the public.

The session is held every second Monday of the month and features some excellent local Celtic musicians.  It is organized by the Boston Celtic Music Fest, a group formed ten years ago to promote Celtic cultural activities in greater Boston.

Gaelic Roots Christmas Gathering Concert at Boston College on Wednesday, December 5


The Gaelic Roots program at Boston College is presenting its annual Christmas Gathering, featuring singer and multi-instrumentalist Gabriel Donohue and singer Marian Makins along with fiddler Séamus Connolly, on Wednesday, December 5, 2012, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Walsh Function Hall.

The event is free and open to the public, and also features some of the Irish music instructors and students at Boston College.

Connolly is founder and director of the Gaelic Roots program and is also the college's Sullivan Artist-in-Residence.

Boston Irish Tourism Group issues free holiday Travel & Culture Guide


The Boston Irish Tourism Association has released its holiday issue of Travel & Culture Guide, a free magazine distributed at visitor kiosks, cultural venues, hotels, pubs and tourism spots throughout Massachusetts.  Read the Press Release here.

The fall/winter 2012-13 Travel & Culture Guide includes profiles on Brian O’Donovan, radio host and producer of Christmas Celtic Sojourn; Mary McTigue, head of the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton; and Keenan Langlois, executive chef at the Granary Tavern in Boston.   There’s a feature article about the last Kennedy Christmas at the White House in 1962, Holiday music concerts in New England, a travel piece on Quebec City, and news about Ireland’s The Gathering, a worldwide marketing effort to invite the Irish Diaspora home in 2013.   Here are the stories from this issue.

Caroline Kennedy presents New Frontier Awards at JFK LIbrary in Boston on Monday, November 19



On Monday, November 19, 2012, Caroline Kennedy is presenting the 2012 John F. Kennedy New Frontier Awards to two women whose work reflects the spirit of President Kennedy.  The ceremony takes place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston.

Receiving the awards in 2012 are Stacey Abrams, Minority Leader of the Georgia House of Representatives and the first woman to lead either party in the Georgia General Assembly; and social entrepreneur Veronika Scott, founder of an innovative humanitarian project that hires homeless women in Detroit.

The event is free and open to the public, but you must register to attend

Irish Pianist/Composer Micheal O Suilleabhain Performing at Boston College Gaelic Roots Series on November 14


Micheal O Suilleabhain, noted pianist, composer and educator, is performing on the piano with a string quartet and acclaimed Irish fiddler Seamus Connolly at Boston College on Wednesday, November 14, 2012.

The concert, which is part of the Gaelic Roots Irish Music Series, takes place from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Irish Room in Gasson Hall on BC's Chestnut Hill campus. It is free and open to the public.

O Suilleabhain first performed at Boston College in 1990, when he organized an Irish fiddle festival called My Love is in America, which laid the groundwork for the Gaelic Roots program started by Connolly, who is the Sullivan Artist in Residence at the college.

Irish Rock Band The Script Performs at Boston's Agganis Arena on November 9

Worchester Hibernian Cultural Centre Presents the Highland Rovers Band on November 3


The high energy Highland Rovers Band is returning to the Hibernian Cultural Centre in Worcester on Saturday, November 3, 2012 at 8:00 p.m.  Tickets are available at the door for $10 general admission and $5 for students with I.D.

The band, which has toured with the Marshall Tucker Band and other national acts,  fuses popular rock percussive rhythms, bagpipes, fiddle and vocal harmonies to create an intricate and fresh sound.

Ancient Order of Hibernians in Lawrence Hosts Misgivings: A Divine Comedy on November 9, to Support Children's Christmas Party


The Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division Eight in Lawrence, is hosting Misgivings, A Divine Comedy of Bellylaughts, Blessings, Blarney and Bingo, at Relief's In, One Market Street in South Lawrence, on Friday, November 9, 2012 at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $20 and proceeds benefit the Children's Christmas Party hosted by AOH Division 8 each year.

Honoring the Late Michael Joyce in South Boston on Saturday, November 3


Michael Joyce, who emigrated from Connemara to Boston in 1949 and became an influential advocate of immigration reform at the Massachusetts State House, died in 1989, but he is still remembered fondly by his family and friends.

They have come together to create the Michael Joyce Memorial Playground in Marine Park in South Boston, a beautiful tribute to Joyce's life.

At the official opening of the park on October 14, 2010,  State Senator Jack Hart of South Boston said, “His family, the many immigrants he helped, and now this playground, are all part of Mike Joyce’s legacy. Children and families for generations will come and enjoy this beautiful park.”

On Saturday, November 3, 2012, the Friends of Michael Joyce group is holding a 5K race in South Boston to raise funds for maintenance and improvements to the park. The race begins and ends at Mother's Rest at Carson Beach.  Here's how to register, and you can follow it on Facebook.

Shawn Thornton of the Boston Bruins is attending the race and registrants can have their picture taken with him.

Irish Harpist Aine Minogue Performs in Bellows Falls, Vermont on Saturday, October 27


Irish harpist Aine Minogue is performing in concert at the Stone Church Arts Concert Series in Bellows Falls, Vermont on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at 7:30 p.m  (doors open at 7:00 p.m.).

Speak Irish! Irish Immersion Language Day at the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton is Saturday, October 27



Le Gaeilge: A Day of Irish Language Immersion, is taking place at the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton on Saturday ,October 27, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The gathering is sponsored by Cumann na Gaeilge i mBoston (Irish Language Society of Boston) in conjunction with the Cultural Centre.

The event includes workshops in Irish conversation, writing, grammar, pronunciation, songs, and more, with break-out sessions for beginners and advanced Irish speakers. Prices range from $20-$30 for ICC members and $25-$35 for non-members, and everyone interested in the Irish language is welcome.

John Farrell Named New Manager of Boston Red Sox

John Edward Farrell was named new manager of the Boston Red Sox today.  He is the 46th person to hold the job. Read about Farrell's first press conference as new manager.

Irish Flutist Michael Tubridy and Fiddler Seamus Connolly Playing at Boston College on October 23

Irish flute player Michael Tubridy is performing with fiddle master Seamus Connolly at an Irish Dance and Ceili taking place at Boston College on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The event, which is free and open to the public, takes place at Gasson Hall on the Chestnut Hill campus.

Noted Irish dancer Kieran Jordan is leading the ceili and dancing activities for the evening. 

Born in County Clare, Michael Tubridy is best known as an original member of The Chieftains, formed in 1962, and plays wooden flute, tin whistle and concertina.  He left the band in 1979 and continues to play great traditional music and teaches at Irish festivals around the world.

Seamus Connolly is the Sullivan Artist in Residence at Boston College, and founder of the school's Gaelic Roots program.  He is a ten-time All Ireland fiddle champion and one of the most influential Irish musicians of his generation.

Joining Tubridy and Connolly on stage are two other great local musicians, Helen Kisiel on piano and Brendan Tonra on fiddle and flute.

Canadian American Club Celebrates 75th Anniversary in Watertown on October 19-21 with Maritime Music Fest

Congratulations to the Canadian American Club in Watertown, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary the weekend of October 19-21, 2012 at the club, located at 202 Arlington Street in Watertown.

Festivities take place all through the weekend, starting on Friday night, October 19, with a free musical session led by Cape Breton pianist Janine Randall, fiddlers Frank Ferrel and Rose Clancy, multi-instrumentalist Stuart Peak and many more.

On Saturday, October 20, activities include a catered dinner in the evening with music by Nova Scotian fiddler Troy MacGillivray, the Jackie Brown Band and piper Mike Kerr.

On Sunday, October 21, check out the afternoon Maritime Family Kitchen Ceildh with Troy MacGillivray and Cape Breton fiddler Kimberley Fraser.

The group has its beginnings back on May 19, 1937, when the Canadian-American League came together in Boston as a way of uniting the many Canadians living in Massachusetts.  According to the Boston Globe, over 200 people attended the first meeting.

"The league is strictly nonpartisan and nonsectarian and has no connection with any political group," said Joseph F. O'Neill, a Prince Edward Island native who was the first president of the group.

In the ensuing years the Canadian American Club, as it is now called, has celebrated Canadian culture in all its forms, particularly traditional music and dance, and has welcomed many other ethnic groups to use its hall, including Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann and other Irish groups.

The Huntington Theatre Company in Boston is presenting the American premier of Christopher Shinn's play, Now or Later, at the Calderwald Pavilion, Boston Center for the Arts, in Boston's South End, from October 17 through November 10, 2012.

US Congressman Richard Neal Receiving Boston Irish Honors Award at Seaport Hotel on October 19


US Congressman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) is receiving an Boston Irish Honors award at a luncheon ceremony in Boston at noon on Friday, October 19, 2012 at the Boston Seaport Hotel.

Now in its third year, the Boston Irish Honors Awards is presented by the Boston Irish Reporter newspaper, as a way of celebrating the achievements and contributions of Irish-Americans in the area.

Others receiving a Boston Irish Honor award at this year's luncheon include Bob and Mary Muse, and Brian and Greg Feeney from Sligo, owners of the Feeney Brothers Contracting.

Irish Cultural Centre Presents An Emigrants Farewell on Friday, October 19


The Irish Cultural Centre in Canton is presenting a touring show called, An Emigrant's Farewell, performed by the Moffatt School of Irish Dancing from County Mayo, on Friday, October 19, 2012 at 7:30 p.m.

An Emigrant's Farewell takes place in 1912 and relates to an Irish family preparing for four of their daughters to emigrate on board the SMS Titanic. The show features great Irish music, singing, dancing and storytelling.

Irish Cultural Centre in Canton Presents One-Man Show on Playwright Brendan Behan, October 12-13



The Irish Cultural Centre is presenting A Broth of a Boy, a one-man play based on the life of Brendan Behan, adapted from Behan's own writings.  A Broth of a Boy is directed by Richard Smithies and stars actor Danny Venezia

The show is running on Friday, October 12 and Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 8:30 p.m. Tickets to the show are $15 general admission, and can be purchased at the door.
 
Called  "A remarkable full-body performance. A winning show" by The Boston Globe. Venezia's performance has garnered rave reviews from audiences and critics alike. 

The Irish Pub at the Centre is open both nights for dinner and drinks.

The Boston Irish Tourism Association mourns the loss of this great friend, musician and leader in the Irish-American community.

Irish Comedy Tour Coming to the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton on Friday, October 5


It's boisterous, outrageous and hysterical.  That's what people are saying about the Irish Comedy Tour coming to the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton on Friday, October 5, 2012.

The doors open at 7:00 p.m. and the show starts at 8:00 p.m.. 

The Irish Comedy Tour features three stand-up comedians - Joey Carroll, Mike McCarthy and Derek Richards - who replicate the party atmosphere of an Irish pub with a barrage of stories, jokes and music.  The comedians are joined for this performance by two members of the band Inchicore, Damon Leibert and Derrick Keane.

This is the only stop in New England this fall for the Irish Comedy Tour, so don't miss out on one of the funniest nights you'll have.

Irish Duo Cillian and Niall Vallely Perform at Blackstone River Theatre on Sunday, October 7


Irish traditional musicians Cillian and Niall Vallely are performing at the Blackstone River Theatre in Cumberland, RI on Sunday, October 7, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.  They're joined by Scottish guitarist Allan Murray.

The Vallely brothers grew up in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, in a musical family.  Their parents, Brian and Eithne Vallely, started the Armagh Pipers Club in 1966 to promote traditional Irish music in the area.

Master Drummer Mance Grady is Teaching the Irish Bodhran at the Irish Cultural Centre This Fall

 
 
Mance Grady, considered to be one of the finest Irish bodhran players in the world, is teaching a ten-week course at the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton, Massachusetts, starting on September 27, 2012.  

The classes take place every Thursday: beginner class goes from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. and intermediate class goes from 8:15 to 9:15 p.m.  Tuition is $175 for ICC members and $200 for non-members.

Grady, a life-long drummer and Rhode Island resident, has devoted the last 37 years to perfecting his playing of the bodhran, an Irish traditional instrument made from goatskin and played with a double-headed stick.  Grady is also a premier bodhran maker.

Photographer Tom Fitzgerald's Exhibit of Irish Musicians Opens at the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton, October 10-29

Award-winning photographer Thomas C. Fitzgerald, who has been photographing Irish and Celtic musicians for over 40 years, is having an exhibit of his work at the Irish Cultural Center in Canton, MA from October 10 through October 29, 2012.

There is an opening reception at the Centre on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., which is open to the public.  Call 781 821-8291 for more details.  Here are directions to the Centre.

Fitzgerald, a photographer at the Massachusetts State House for many years, has assembled a wide collection of some of the leading Celtic musicians and dancers in the world.

Among the musicians and dancers in the exhibit are Winnie Horan and Mick McCauley, Sharon Shannon, Paul Brady, Kieran Jordan and Mick Moloney and Eugene O'Donnell.

The Irish Cultural Centre is a year -round cultural and sports facility located on 46 acres in Canton.   It hosts the annual Boston Irish Festival, year-round classes, and regular cultural activities.

Eire Society of Boston Hosts Reading by Irish Author Aine Greany at Boston Public Library on October 14


 
The Eire Society of Boston is hosting a reading by Irish-born author Aine Greaney at the Boston Public Library in Copley Square on Sunday, October 14, 2012, starting at 2:00 p.m.  The reading takes place in the Orientation Room on the first floor of the library.

Greaney is reading from her most recent novel, Dance Lessons, a story of a young widow's quest to find the truth about her Irish-born husband's life and lies.  The novel explores the issues of family, land, women's issues and the 1980s wave of Irish immigration to Boston.

The John F. Kennedy President Library & Museum in Boston is presenting a forum entitled, Listening In: JFK's Secret Tapes, on Thursday, October 4, 2012, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

The forum features Caroline Kennedy, presidential historian Ted Widmer, author Ellen Fitzpatrick, and journalist Tom Oliphant, who serves as moderator.

Ireland's Tourism Officials Announce The Gathering Campaign in Boston


Ireland's tourism officials introduced a new initiative called The Gathering: Ireland 2013 in Boston last Friday, September 28, 2012 at the Boston Harbor Hotel before an audience of tour operators, travel agencies, local media and representatives of Irish organizations.

Irish Tourism Minister Leo Varadkar, T.D., told the audience, "I am delighted to be here in Boston and I carry with me a very special message from the government of Ireland.  We want you to invite anyone with a connection to Ireland to come and visit and be our our unique celebration, The Gathering.

The massive, year-long celebration of Ireland will bring the country's sprawling Diaspora back to Ireland for a series of family gatherings, festivals, sporting events, concerts and a variety of special activities taking place in counties, cities, towns and villages across the Irish landscape.
