AOH Irish Famine Commemoration Takes Place in Lawrence on Sunday, May 6

Division 8 of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Lawrence, Massachusetts is holding its annual Commemoration of the Great Hunger to take place at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, 2012 at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery on Barker Street in Metheun.  Guest speaker is Dr. Joe Downs, AOH State Historian.

The event is free and open to the public.

Division 8 A.O.H. President William J. Sullivan stated, “It is fitting and appropriate that we pay tribute to the Irish of Lawrence and to the famine descendents who settled in Greater Lawrence. It is our turn to give back to those who gave so much. This monument stands as a testimony to their accomplishments and their lives!”

The An Gorta Mor Memorial in Lawrence was formally unveiled on May 6, 2006, thanks to the efforts of the late Dave Burke and members of Division 8 AOH, who raised over $40,000 to create the monument.  Former Boston Mayor and US Ambassador to the Vatican Ray Flynn was guest speaker.
