Boston Landmarks Orchestra's Dance Carnival, August 23, Features Harney Academy of Irish Dance

The Boston Landmarks Orchestra is holding a free Dance Carnival at the Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 23, 2017, featuring musical works by some of the world’s leading composers, from Strauss to Copland.

Among the highlights of the festival is Leroy Anderson’s Irish Suite: The Girl I Left Behind Me and Irish Washerwoman, which is being performed by one of the premier schools of Irish dance in USA, the HarneyAcademy of Irish Dance.  Founded in 1990 by Liam Harney, a two-time World Champion, the Irish stepdancers in the academy have won numerous national and international competitions, including at the World Irish Championships in Glasgow in 2016.

A native of Cambridge and winner of two Tony Awards, Anderson is best known for his composition, Sleigh Ride, now a Christmas classic.  Anderson’s Irish Suite was commissioned by the Eire Society of Boston in 1947 as a tribute to the city’s large Irish community and its illustrious musical traditions. Two of the suite’s six movements are being performed at the festival: The Girl I Left Behind Me, with its series of ingenious variations; and The Irish Washerwoman, a double jig given the full Andersonian contrapuntal treatment.
