US Census Reports that Massachusetts is America's Most Irish State




The US Census Bureau reports that Massachusetts is still the most Irish state in the USA, with 23.7% of all residents claiming Irish ancestry.  That's over 1.5 million people in a state with 6.5 million residents.

Boston, considered to be the Capital of Irish America, has 17.4% Irish-Americans.

The data, which comes from the 2009 American Community Survey, was released this week by the US Census Bureau in time for Irish-American Heritage Month, which takes place each March and celebrates St. Patrick's Day.

The Boston Globe's Emily Sweeney wrote a story in January 2011 naming Scituate as the most Irish town in Massachusetts. Here are the top Irish cities and towns in Massachusetts:
