Boston Irish Famine Memorial unveiled on this day: June 28, 1998

Boston's Irish Famine Memorial was unveiled before a crowd of 7,000 people on Sunday, June 28, 1998 at the corner of School and Washington Street along Boston's Freedom Trail and Irish Heritage Trail . The $1 million Memorial commemorated the 150th anniversary of the Irish Famine which occurred in Ireland between 1845-1849, killing nearly one million people and forcing another two million people to emigrate to  Boston, New York, Halifax and other eastern seaboard cities. The memorial project was headed by the late Thomas J. Flatley , along with Michael Cummings and others from the Boston community.  For a list of the committee click here . Catskills Irish Arts Week - July 10-16, 2011 Features World's Best Irish Trad Musicians

Irish Fiddler Willie Kelly Some of the world's best traditional Irish musicians, singers, dancers and crafts artists are at the 17th annual Catskills Irish Arts Week , taking place in East Durham, NY on July 10-16, 2011. It's an amazing gathering of over 70 top artists who teach and perform Irish music and dance at the highest level throughout the week, according to artistic director Paul Keating.  The Irish Arts Week culminates in the Andy McGann Traditional Irish Music Festival on Saturday, July 16 throughout the day, named for the great Sligo-style fiddler from the Bronx.   For a full list of faculty members, click here . Nunset Boulevard on stage at Reagle Theatre in Waltham on June 18-19

Aoife Clancy Interview with Russell Gusetti, executive director of the Blackstone River Theatre (BRT), and founder of the Summer Solstice Festival taking place on Saturday, June 18, at Diamond Hill Park in Cumberland, RI. You're launching a new Summer Solstice Festival this weekend with some great traditional music.  How did you come up with the name?  The name was actually suggested by Robbie O'Connell who is on BRT's Board. As we sought to plan a big event to commemorate Blackstone River Theatre's 10th anniversary season, he suggested the Solstice name when he found I was looking to move our festival from July to third week in June. While it is still very much a Celtic music festival with an emphasis on Irish culture (Robbie O'Connell, Aoife Clancy , Burning Bridget Cleary , Matt and Shannon Heaton , Pendragon , Annalivia ), it gave me the opportunity to seek out some groups offering an additional world music perspective like The Gnomes , Triple Spiral ...

International Tourism to United States is Breaking Records, reports US Commerce Department

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Commerce today announced that international visitors spent an estimated $12.3 billion on travel to, and tourism-related activities within, the United States during April. This represents a 19 percent increase from April 2010. Travel and tourism-related exports have increased, on average, nearly $1.4 billion a month in 2011. “Since President Obama challenged us to double U.S. exports during the next five years, the U.S. travel and tourism industry has proven itself up to challenge,” noted Francisco Sánchez, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade. “Our nation’s travel and tourism businesses are a driving force in helping us achieve the goals of the National Export Initiative - helping to strengthen our economy and support millions of American jobs.” International visitors have spent an estimated $48.3 billion on U.S. travel and tourism-related goods and services year to date (January through April), an increase of 13 per...

With Boston Bruins Win, Massachusetts is declared the State of Champions in the Sports World

  The Mass Office of Travel & Tourism has declared Massachusetts as the "State of Champions" after the Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup Championship last night. The first annual Summer Solstice Festival is taking place this Saturday, June 18, 2011 at Diamond Hill Park in Cumberland, RI . The all-day festival features Irish performers like Aoife Clancy , Robbie OConnell , Shannon and Matt Heaton , Burning Bridget Cleary , and Pendragon . The festival is being organized by  the Blackstone River Theatre , which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year as one of the premier non-profit organizations in New England. In addition to five stages with continuous music, the Summer Solstice Festival features a variety of dancing exhibitions,  cultural activities, plus vendors, food courts and play areas for children. (Boston) – The Boston Irish Tourism Association has released its annual schedule of outdoor festivals and concerts featuring Irish and Celtic music throughout the New England region and upstate New York. Kicking off this year’s schedule is the 1 st annual Summer Solstice Festival , taking place on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at Diamond Hill Park in Cumberland, RI.  Organized by the Blackstone River Theatre, a non-profit group promoting culture and the arts year round, this year’s festival features Aoife Clancy and Robbie O’Connell, the Heatons, Pendragon, Annalivia, atwater-Donnelly Trio and more.  With five stages, there’s continuous music, set dancing and ceili dancing throughout the day, as well as children’s area, vendors and food and craft vendors. Irish Block Party in Downtown Boston on June 16

The 19 th Annual Jose McIntyre’s Block Party is taking take place Thursday June 16, 2011  at Jose McIntyre ’s Back Entrance: 83 Central Street in downtown Boston. Tickets are $10 at the door and can also be ordered online .  All guests must be 21 or older.   The renowned event includes Boston’s famous U2 tribute band Joshua Tree as well as Ryan Palma, Devri Irish, Bearfight and big beats with DJ Littles, plus street performers, great prizes and more.  All proceeds benefit the local breast cancer non-profit organization Men With Heart . Cape Cod Irish Group Hosts Bloomsday Celebration of Ireland's novelist James Joyce on June 16

The Sons of Erin Club in West Yarmouth, Cape Cod, is hosting its first ever Bloomsday event on Thursday, June 16 at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. The event features readings and live music.  Cost of admission if $5. Bloomsday , which is celebrated around the world, pays tribute to the works of James Joyce, Ireland's 20th century novelist whose work, Ulysses, is considered one of the world's best novels. Irish Scholar Phil O'Leary is Speaking at Worcester Hibernian Cultural Centre on June 9

Irish language and literature scholar Phillip O'Leary is giving a lecture at the Worcester Hibernian Cultural Centre on Thursday, June 9, 2011 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Admission is $5.00 and the lecture is open to the public.  A professor in the English Department and the Irish Studies program at Boston College, Professor O'Leary has published numerous scholarly books on the role that Irish language plays in Irish literature. Located at 19 Temple Street, the Worcester Hibernian Cultural Centre is a gathering spot for the Irish-American community in Central Massachusetts.
