Glee Star Damian McGinty Signs on as Cultural Ambassador for Derry City, Northern Ireland

Singer and actor Damian McGinty has signed on as a "Cultural Champion" for his home town of Derry City, Northern Ireland, which has been named the UK's Cultural Capital in 2013.  “Like everyone else I was so happy when the city won the honour of City of Culture for 2013," McGinty told the Derry Journal newspaper recently.  "There are so many talented people and creatives in the city. I know that from my own experience of the music scene at home. The city is bursting at the seams with talented musicians and performers. Growing up in Derry you are surrounded by music and that played a big part in moulding me into the performer that I am today." Irish Pastoral Centre Holds Networking Event at Boston's Black Rose Pub on Thursday, March 1

The Irish Pastoral Centre of Boston is holding an event to honor long-time volunteers Rita O'Leary-Stones and Chris Lavery at the Black Rose Pub near Faneuil Hall on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. Live music is being presented by Kevin Doherty and Friends . There is no cover charge but a donation is requested at the door to support the Irish Pastoral Centre, which has provided immigration and social services outreach to thousands of Irish and Irish Americans in the greater Boston area over the past 25 years. Author Kevin O'Hara is recipient of Holyoke' St. Patrick's Day JFK Award

Kevin O'Hara , whose award-winning books recount life growing up in an Irish Catholic family and community in Western Massachusetts, is recipient of the 2012 John F. Kennedy Award given out annually by the Holyoke St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee . The prestigious award was first bestowed on John F. Kennedy in 1958, and later named in his honor.  Other recipients over the years include Cardinal Richard Cushing, House Speaker Congressman John McCormack , actress Maureen O'Hara, philantrophist Thomas J. Flatley , Congressman Richard E. Neal  , Senator Ted Kennedy , and Raymond L. Flynn , former Mayor of Boston and US Ambassador to the Vatican. US-Ireland Alliance Hosts Oscar Wilde Awards in Santa Monica Leading Up to Oscar Night

Three Academy Award nominees – John Logan , Melissa McCarthy and Michelle Williams – were honored at the ceremony, which took place at J.J. Abrams Santa Monica production company, Bad Robot. Attending the ceremony was George Mitchell, former US Senator and President Clinton's Special Envoy to Northern Ireland, for whom the US-Ireland Alliance named its Scholarship Program. Burren Pub in Davis Square Hosting Traditional Music Concert on Wednesday, February 22

Ged Foley, Orla Harrington and Andrew MacNamara   The Burren Pub in Davis Square, Somerville, is continuing its Back Room Series with a concert by a group of great musicians on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. Hosted by Brian O'Donovan , popular radio host of the weekly WGBH show, Celtic Sojourn , the concert features Andrew MacNamara on button accordion, Ged Foley on vocals and guitar and Orla Harrington on fiddle.  The trio will be joined by special guest Joey Arbata on uilleann pipes. Richard and Rick Hoyt - the inspirational father and son team that run in the Boston Marathon each year and over 1,000 other races in the past thirty-five years - are the Grand Marshalls at the Cape Cod St. Patrick's Day parade taking place on Saturday, March 10, 2012. The father-son team has been an inspiration to millions of fans who watched their courage, joy and determination over the years. Past Grand Marshalls of the Cape Cod parade have included Bruins players Bobby Orr and Terry O'Reilly , former Boston Mayor Ray Flynn , and boxing great Irish Micky Ward among others.  This year's parade begins at 11:00 a.m. For more information click here . Boston Police Pipe Band is Marching in St. Patrick's Day Parades in South Boston and Quebec City in March

The world-famous Boston Police Gaelic Column of Pipes and Drums is marching in the South Boston St. Patrick's Day Parade on Sunday, March 18, 2012, and the Quebec City St. Patrick's Day Parade in Quebec, Canada on Saturday, March 24, 2012.  The band formed in 1992 and has become one of the city's treasured icons.  It has represented Boston with distinction everywhere it goes, winning the best pipe band award at the Cork City Parade ; performing alongside the Dropkick Murphys , at Boston Bruin games, and aboard the USS Constitution .  And the Police have played at hundreds of charity events to help a number of worthy causes. St. Patrick's Day Road Races on March 17-18 in Boston, Somerville and Holyoke, Massachusetts

( Courtesy of Holyoke St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee ) As part of the St. Patrick's Day celebrations taking place in Massachusetts this season, check out these three road races the weekend of March 17-18, 2012.  The 37th annual Holyoke St. Patrick’s Road Race takes place on Saturday, March 17 at 1:00 p.m. The 10 K (6.2 mile) race starts at Maple Street in downtown Holyoke.  There are timing clocks at each mile for  runners and a giant electronic clock for spectators.  The Children's Fun Run starts on Maple Street this year. Ras na hEireann 5K Road Race in Somerville takes place on Sunday, March 18, at 11:00 a.m.  The 3.1 mile run begins on Elm Street in Davis Square, right in front of the famous Burren Irish Pub , and winds its way through the streets of Somerville.   Check out the after-party at the Burren afterwards. 2012 St. Patrick's Day Parades, Concerts and Cultural Events in Massachusetts

Boston Irish Tourism Association (BITA) today released its 2012 schedule of St. Patrick's Day activities - including six Irish parades and dozens of cultural events - taking place this March in cities and towns across Massachusetts.  With nearly 24% of residents claiming Irish ancestry, Massachusetts is the nation's most Irish-American state, according to the US Census. The nation's first St. Patrick's Day celebration took place in Boston on March 17, 1737. Among the renowned musicians performing in the coming weeks are Irish traditional music bands Altan and Dervish; Celtic Woman and Riverdance of PBS fame; Irish tenors Ronan Tynan and Anthony Kearns; fiddle champion Seamus Connolly and Celtic Sojourn, hosted by WGBH's Brian O'Donovan; and Irish rockers the Saw Doctors and Boston's own Dropkick Murphys.   BITA is giving away free concert tickets to many of the concerts.  Go to the Contest Page for more details. Boston Police Gaelic Column of Pipes & Drums Play at the Wake and Funeral of Boston Mayor Kevin White

The legendary Irish bagpipe group, Boston Police Gaelic Column of Pipes and Drums , was called upon to play at the wake and funeral of former Boston Mayor Kevin H. White this week. The public wake took place at the Parkman House on Beacon Hill, the mayoral mansion where Mayor White held court for his three terms in office (1968-84).  The funeral took place at St. Cecilia Church in Boston's South End.
