The Long Room at Trinity College Dublin

Ireland’s reputation as a wellspring of literary genius is well-known across the world. This nation of storytellers, poets, novelists and writers from every genre gather regularly to celebrate the written word, to meet other writers and to interact directly with book lovers. Check out one of the island’s storied literary festivals in 2024 to be inspired yourself.

Alice McDermott

The Listowel Writers' Week in Co. Kerry, from May 29-June 2 is Ireland’s oldest literary and arts festival. Since 1971, writers have been flocking to the festival to read their work to discerning audiences, take part in creative writing workshops, and soak up the incredible beauty of Listowel and the Kerry countryside. This year’s featured writer is New York novelist Alice McDermott, whose work brilliantly captures the Irish Diaspora’s deep connections to Ireland.



Bloomsday Celebration

Since 1994, Dublin’s James Joyce Centre has organized the annual Bloomsday Celebration, taking place this year from June 11-16 throughout Dublin to celebrate James Joyce’s masterpiece, Ulysses. Literary exhibits, lectures, readings, reenactments and walking tours of Dublin bring to life June 16, 1904, the day on which the great novel took place.




While in Dublin, visit a wonderful new immersive experience on The Book of Kells at Trinity College, one of the most famous printed documents in the world and one of Ireland's most important cultural treasures.  Set within a specially constructed pavilion in the historic grounds of Trinity College Dublin, Ireland’s oldest university, the Book of Kells Experience takes visitors from a view the Book of Kells in the Old Library, before moving to the Long Room, considered to be one of the world’s most beautiful libraries. 


Marie Howe

The 14th Belfast Book Festival, June 6-13, take place at the Crescent Arts Centre in South Belfast, a perfect setting to appreciate Northern Ireland’s extraordinary literary traditions that have inspired writers the world over. This year’s guests includes noted Irish novelist Colin Tóibín, Marie Howe, poet laureate of New York State, war correspondent Fergal Keane, and two Irish novelists, Elaine Feeney and Louise Kennedy, in conversation.

Paul Lynch

The acclaimed Dalkey Book Festival, June 13-16, offers an extraordinary line-up of writers at the top of their crafts, set in this beautiful seaside town south of Dublin. Just a sampling this year includes Irish writers Anne Enright, Claire Keegan, Fintan O’Toole, Paul Lynch, Paul Murray, Elaine Feeney, Donal Ryan, David McWilliams, Stephen Rea, David Brooks, Isabella Hammad, John Boyne, Nuala O’Connor and Neil Jordan.

W.B.Yeats

The 65th Yeats International Summer School takes place July 11-19 in Sligo, Yeats’ ancestral home and the source of his poetic inspiration. Yeats scholars from around the world gather to attend lectures and seminars, poetry readings, tours, concerts and cultural events in the beautiful setting of Co. Sligo. Among the International scholars this year include Professor Paige Reynolds, College of the Holy Cross in Worcester.
