Irish Traditional Trio Pays Musical Tribute to the Famous Flanagan Brothers at The Lilypad in Cambridge, Sunday, November 2
The musical tribute, featuring in-person performances set against an extraordinary backdrop of archival sounds and projected images, is being performed by Dan Neely on banjo, Diarmuid Ó Meachair on melodeon and Matt Mulqueen on piano.
Neely, a musician and ethnomusicologist, is a longtime music columnist for the Irish Echo newspaper in New York, and has done extensive research on Irish music recording stars from the 1920s, including the Flanagan Brothers as well as Boston's own Dan Sullivan and the Shamrock Band. Ó Meachair, an accomplished accordionist, mandolin player and sean nos singer from Cúil Aodha, Co. Cork, was awarded the prestigious TG4 Young Musician of the year award in 2022. Mulqueen, from Baltimore, MD, is an accomplished pianist who studied with traditional and classical performer Donna Long.

Originally from County Wexford, the Flanagan Brothers were wildly popular traditional Irish musicians who often played as a duo that included Mike and Joe, and as a trio with their brother Lewis. The family settled in Albany, NY before moving to NYC, and in the 1920s became popular performers in the city's dance hall scene and on the radio, displaying "a high-spirited energy which perfected reflected that era's Irish sensibility....captured on the nearly 170 sides they made for ever record label of the day," writes Neely.

The event is part of "Live at the Druid," a concert series at the Druid Pub that spotlights global roots music. The concert takes place next door to he Druid at the Lilypad, a cozy venue in Inman Square, the offers an intimate setting for this special event.
