New England Irish-American Heritage Month Celebrations Continue through March 31


St. Patrick’s Day may be over, but there’s still plenty of Irish activities in New England as the nation’s most Irish region celebrates Irish-American Heritage Month throughout March. The Boston Irish Tourism Association has a sampling below of activities taking place from March 21-31, 2022. 

Celtic Woman 
Grammy nominated Celtic Woman, the most successful all-female Irish group in history, is currently on an 83-city North American tour called Postcards from Ireland, including these stops in New England. 

March 24 - Chevalier Theatre, Medford, MA 
March 29 - Merill Auditorium, Portland, ME 
March 30 - The Flynn Center, Burlington, VT 
March 31 - Capitol Center, Concord, NH 

Blackstone River Theatre (BRT) 
This gem of a concert hall in Cumberland, RI has been a treasure for live, acoustic music in New England for many years. On March 26 at 8 p.m., BRT Presents: Mile Twelve, featuring five of the most promising young musicians in bluegrass: Catherine “BB” Bowness (banjo), Evan Murphy (guitar, lead vocals), Nate Sabat (bass, lead vocals) and new members Ella Jordan (fiddle, vocals), and Korey Brodsky (mandolin). riverfolk.org 

Lawrence Irish Heritage Month 
Sponsored by AOH Division 8, the Lawrence Irish Heritage Month continues to offer quality programming year after year. On March 27, Pianist Terri Kelley And Vocalist Bill Donelan present their annual Celtic Melodies concert. This year’s concert is dedicated to the late, great Irish pianist Tom Garvey. The concert takes place at the Lawrence Public Library, Sargent Auditorium, at 2 p.m. and is free to the public. 

And through March 31, the Lawrence Heritage State Park Visitors Center has an Irish exhibit called, Rev. James T. O’Reilly OSA, the Augustinians and their Contributions to Lawrence. 

Irish Cultural Centre of New England 
Situated on 46-acre campus in Canton, MA the Irish Cultural Centre is a year round headquarters for Irish culture, heritage, sports and fun. On March 21 & March 26 take set dancing lessons with Cait Bracken, or stop into the Centre’s Irish Pub on Friday and Saturday for a pint, a meal and a couple of tunes from local musicians. 

Newport Irish Heritage Month 
 Newport, RI is proud of its distinct Irish heritage going back to the 18th century, and has two final events left on this year’s Irish Heritage Month calendar. On Wednesday, March 23, the Museum of Irish History in Newport presents a lecture by Steve Marino entitled, The Life & Times of Patrick J. Boyle, Newport’s First Irish Mayor. The lecture is part of the Michael F. Crowley Lecture Series and takes place at the Wayfinder Hotel. And on zoom. 

On Sunday, March 27, the Newport Irish Heritage Month officially comes to a close with a Cliff Walk at the east end of Narragansett Avenue at 3 p.m. The free event features live traditional Irish music, Irish set dancing demonstrations, and a special performance by the AOH Men Singers.

Manchester's St. Patrick's Day Parade
The 25th St. Patrick's Day Parade in Manchester, NH was postponed in 2020 due to the pandemic, and now it is returning on Sunday, March 27 to celebrate this milestone!  The parade kicks off at the north end of Elm Street, and this year's Grand Marshall is hometown writer and marketing executive Stephanie McLaughlin.
