EMBRACE BOSTON MEMORIAL IS UNVEILED ON BOSTON COMMON ON JANUARY 13, 2023

A public unveiling of Embrace Boston, a bronze memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife, Coretta Scott King, takes place at 1 p.m. on Friday, January 13, 2023 on Boston Common.

The memorial depicts Dr. King and his wife embracing after he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and celebrates their time in Boston when they met as students. It was designed by internationally acclaimed sculptor Hank Willis Thomas.

Organizers say the memorial will serve as a permanent monument representing the Kings’ time and powerful presence in Boston, a time that helped shape their approach to an equitable society.

“This moment brings with it the culmination of years of work. It is a celebration of the profound role our city played in the lives of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King,” said M. Lee Pelton. President & CEO of The Boston Foundation. “The Kings met and fell in love here—and Boston was one of the places they called home.”

What is now called the Embrace Boston Fund was established at the Boston Foundation in 2017, with an inaugural gift of $1,000,000 from local entrepreneur Paul English.

The public is invited to attend the outdoor unveiling on Boston Common. The ceremony will be displayed on large screens positioned near the Parkman Bandstand, complete with a live DJ and hot refreshments. Boston Common is the nation’s oldest public park, founded in 1634, and is managed by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department.

The Boston Irish Film Festival is presenting a fresh new look at early Irish filmmaking with the presentation of Blazing the Trail: The Story of the Kalem Film Company in Ireland. General Edward L. Logan, Namesake of Boston's Logan International Airport

General Edward L. Logan (1875-1939), namesake of Boston’s Logan International Airport , died on July 6 1939 from a sudden 'heart ailment.'  His brother, Reverend Leo J. Logan, presided over the funeral mass at the Gate of Heaven Church in South Boston, with tributes by leading politicians like Senator David I. Walsh , former Massachusetts Governor and Boston Mayor James M. Curley and former Mayor John F. Fitzgerald .  Logan is buried at the Calvary Cemetery in West Roxbury.  A first generation Irish-American, military leader, civic leader and municipal judge with family roots in Galway and South Boston,  Edward was the oldest of nine children of Lawrence and Catherine (O’Connor), according to Michael Cummings of Milton, an expert on the Logan Family. Damian McGinty, former Celtic Thunder Star, Performs in Hartford and Providence this Fall

Damian McGinty , the young singing star from Derry, Northern Ireland who performed with Celtic Thunder , is returning to New England in October as part of a national tour with  Ethan Bortnick . They will be performing in Hartford, CT on October 5, followed by two shows in Providence, RI on October 12, 2014. Find details here.
