Massachusetts Commemorates September 11, 2024

The Massachusetts 9/11 Fund is organizing the 23rd Anniversary Commemoration of 9/11 on Wednesday, September 11, 2024 in Boston. See today's full schedule.

Events takng place at the Massachusetts State House this morning include a moment of silence, a reading of the names of the 9/11 victims, and music by Josh Groban. The ‘Star Spangled Banner” by Francis Scott Key is being performed by Boston Fire Department Acapella Group. 

State Representative and Speaker Pro Tempore Kate Hogan of the 3rd Middlesex District gives welcoming and closing remarks in the State House Chamber of the House of Representatives.

In the afternoon, there is a wreath laying ceremony in Boston's Public Garden at the Garden of Remembrance at 1:30 p.m. The Boston Police Gaelic Column of Pipes and Drums plays in the Public Garden, followed by Boston Police Officer Steve McNulty singing 'God Bless America.'

Among the most powerful memorials in Massachusetts is the Boston Logan 9/11 Memorial at Boston Logan International Airport,  a permanent memorial that honors the passengers and crews of American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, the two planes that departed Boston Logan for Los Angeles, but were hijacked by terrorists who flew them into the World Trade Towers in New York.

South of Boston, visit the Plymouth 911 Memorial Monument on South Spooner Street in Plymouth. 

In Worcester, the Hanover Theatre presents America the Beautiful: A Patriotic Musical at Noon.

Numerous 9/11 commemorations are taking place throughout the Commonwealth on September 11, 2024 in Braintree, Cape Cod, Cambridge, Brookline and other cities and towns across the Bay State.

Boston 25 News reports that "of the 2,996 people who lost their lives on 9/11, 206 lived in or were from Massachusetts."
