US Census Reports Irish is second largest ethnic group in USA


The US Census Bureau released its annual Irish Heritage Month statistics in anticipation of St. Patrick's Day in March.  The findings reveal that 34.7 million Americans claim Irish ancestry, which is more than seven times the population of Ireland itself.

"Irish was was the nation's second most frequently reported ancestry, trailing only German," the report noted.

In February 2011, the Bureau reported that Massachusetts is the most Irish state in America, with nearly 24% of residents claiming Irish ancestry.
